Every New Year is thought to bring new beginnings and adventures. For one department here at Schneck Medical Center, this 2017's New Year brought forth a move. Schneck Rehabilitation, previously located in the former Blue and Company building across from the library, moved to the third floor of Schneck’s outpatient center mid-January.
The Rehabilitation Department staff includes Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Athletic Trainers, and Wound Care Nurses. Together, this expert staff works daily as a team in providing a multidisciplinary approach towards giving optimal patient care.
On an average day, the rehabilitation department treats close to 100 patients. Of those 100 patients, services provided range from:
- Physical Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech and Language Pathology
- Wound and Ostomy Care
- Lymphedema Management
- Pediatric Therapy
- Vestibular Rehabilitation
- Hand Therapy
- Sports Medicine
- Athletic Trainers partnered with area schools
- Home Health Care (Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy)
- Neurological Specialists
The previous rehab center provided 6,600 square feet for all of these treatments. Of this space, each discipline shared anywhere from one to four private treatment rooms, making patient privacy a huge challenge. Square footage wasn’t the only limitation the rehab center faced. A crowded waiting area and limited patient parking were also challenges. Thirteen available parking spots were shared between the Schneck Rehab, Schneck Financial Services, and Schneck Urology group.
With this new REvamped, modern layout, the rehab center has expanded to 13,000 square feet. This expansion allows for: increased private treatment areas and waiting room, larger gym with an additional area for athletes, and a second gym space for Pediatric treatments. Easier access in and out of the building and increased patient parking with shuttle accessibility are also advantages to the new rehab center.
From 2011 to 2015, a 38% increase in rehab patient visits was observed. Continued growth is projected. Schneck Rehabilitation Center is able to accommodate this projection better with this new expansion.
