During Your Visit

Schneck offers outpatient and inpatient services. Outpatient services are visits that are typically done during the day and you return home after your appointment or procedure. Inpatient services are visits where you would stay overnight here at Schneck. 

Care and Treatment

During your hospital stay you will be cared for by a highly trained, qualified, and compassionate staff. From dieticians, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, lab technicians, pharmacists, security officers, physicians, and nurses to social workers and our pastoral care team - we are all here to work together toward your recovery.
Each patient care unit is managed by a department director who is responsible for the quality of your care. If you have any particular questions, concerns, or problems please do not hesitate to ask for the director or call a patient services representative at (812) 522-0440.


Pastoral Care

Schneck Medical Center welcomes visits from the pastors of any of our patients. If you do not have a relationship with a pastor and desire to speak with one, we will try to make arrangements. Schneck has a small chapel on the first floor by the cantina. Learn more about our pastoral care.
 
Advance Directives
Formal Advance Directives are documents written in advance of a serious illness. They state your choices for healthcare or name someone to make those choices in the event you become unable to make them yourself. Learn more about Advance Directives

Gift Shop

Blings & Things, Schneck's gift shop, is operated by the Schneck Guild. You can find flowers, jewelry, gifts for the newest addition to your family, snacks and drinks, and home decor, as well as seasonal items. 

We encourage you to come in and visit the gift shop throughout the year for a varying array of seasonal items. 


Television, Telephone, and Meals

Television: Cable television is available free of charge in patient suites. All networks are available as well as many of the popular cable channels.
Telephone: Bedside telephones are available for patient use. There is no charge for local calls. Outside callers may reach patients by dialing directly to their room at numbers posted in each room or via the switchboard at (812) 522-2349. Long distance calls must be placed collect, billed to a third party, or made in conjunction with a calling card.
Food and Nutrition Services: Our team of outstanding food preparation specialists and servers are dedicated to your nutritional needs. Your doctor will determine the specific diet during your stay. If you are on a special diet, some foods may be modified or restricted. A member of the dietary staff visits patient rooms daily and will be happy to answer any questions concerning your diet. Menus for the next day will be on breakfast trays each morning.
 

Visitors

(inpatient)
General visiting hours are daily from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visiting hours in our Family Life Center are from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. Fathers and immediate family enjoy open visiting hours.
 

Discharge Planner/Social Worker

Our Patient Services Department provides a wide range of services. These services are designed to help and support healthcare activities. The staff includes experienced social workers and nurses who become involved early in the hospital stay to encourage the patient and family to participate in the treatment and discharge plan. 

These services include: 
  • Counseling to help with lifestyle changes which may be necessary because of the patient's medical condition and helping patients and families affected by chronic and terminal illnesses.
  • Information and referral assistance to connect patients and families with community resources related to insurance, legal, and financial programs.
  • Discharge Planning which includes help in obtaining medical equipment such as hospital beds, wheelchairs, commodes, canes, walkers, feeding pumps, and glucose monitoring machines.
  • Skilled home care services which include IV therapy and nutrition management.
  • Home care support such as hospice, home companions, housekeeping, and other chore services.
  • Placement services to nursing homes and transfers to other hospitals.
  • Special transportation arrangements for wheelchair and stretcher transports by medical van or ambulance. 
  • The professional staff considers the social values and economic environment in which the patient lives and works. The patient and family are involved in decisions regarding the needs identified, the plans for intervention and the providers to be utilized for services and/or referrals. This information is shared with the health care team and contributes to the treatment and rehabilitation of the whole person. Blood Bank

(inpatient)
During your stay, you may require blood from the Blood Bank. All blood used at Schneck Medical Center is fully tested for diseases transmitted by blood products and is considered safe for transfusion. If, however, your family chooses to donate blood for you it must be done at least three (3) days prior to the need. Contact the Indiana Blood Center for blood donation. Some general guidelines for donating blood are as follows:
  • The donor must be a relative or friend whose blood type is compatible with yours. (The lab will type blood for a small fee.)
  • Age 17-72
  • Weight 110 lbs. or more
  • Good health
  • No cold or flu symptoms for 7 days prior to scheduled donation
  • Donors on medication should call to verify that they will be able to donate
