# 3 Reasons to Get Your Skin Cancer Screening

April 26, 2021 | Preventative Care

May brings a lot of excitement: The weather is getting warmer, vacation season is kicking off, and outdoor activities are in full swing. But May is also Skin Cancer Awareness Month, so before you start spending more time outside, now is a good time to check in with your skin.

According to the [Skin Cancer Foundation](https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/skin-cancer-facts/), skin cancer is the most common cancer both in the United States and worldwide: One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70. Though that seems scary, you can protect yourself from sun damage in a number of ways—starting with a skin cancer screening. Check out these three great reasons to get yours.

## 1. Finding skin cancer early could save your life.

Your risk for developing skin cancer increases each year. Though it is a visible disease–one you can spot–it also spreads quickly. Getting your screening allows your doctor to look for and detect skin cancer before it becomes a bigger problem.

## 2. Skin cancer is treatable.

Skin cancer cases that are detected early are easier to treat. If your doctor finds a concerning mole or spot, a biopsy will reveal whether it is skin cancer and (if yes) its level of severity. Left untreated, skin cancer can spread inward to other parts of the body, making it more difficult to remove.

## 3. The screening is simple.

Your skin cancer screening is a simple process that can be included in your routine doctor visit. If you are already aware of spots that have changed or look irregular, be sure to mention them. Your doctor will then examine your skin, including hard-to-see places like your scalp, back, or soles of your feet, for any concerning areas. If your doctor suspects that a spot might be cancerous, he or she may proceed with a biopsy or other treatment measures.

### Other Important Prevention Methods

In addition to getting a screening, there are other steps you can take to prevent skin cancer:
● Stay in the shade and out of direct sunlight
● Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen before going outside, and reapply every 30 minutes
● Cover your skin with clothing, headwear, and sunglasses
● Take a close-up look at your skin every month
