A sleep study, or polysomnography, is a sleep exam used by a sleep medicine doctor to monitor your brain activity and other select information, such as your breathing and oxygen, to identify and diagnose sleep disorders. Sleep studies can be performed at a sleep center or in the comfort of your home.

## What Happens During a Sleep Study?

Despite the inactivity of your body, your brain is very active while you sleep. This activity can let a sleep medicine doctor know if your body is experiencing healthy sleep cycles like REM. During a sleep study, you’ll wear certain small devices that monitor your oxygen levels, eye movement, heart rate, and breathing. The device will record when your sleep is interrupted and in what way. These are indications used by the technician and sleep medicine doctor to diagnose any possible sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, sleepwalking, sleep talking, narcolepsy, insomnia, or other issues.

If you’re experiencing sporadic or interrupted sleep frequently, you may benefit from a sleep study. Individuals who are experiencing sleep apnea also qualify for a sleep study.

 ## Types of Sleep Studies at Schneck

We offer two main types of sleep studies. Each one is just as effective as the other. They're both used to identify a set of specific sleep issues you may be experiencing.

### In-person sleep study

Schneck Sleep Center offers a newly renovated sleep lab and features a queen-size bed with complete bath. We want our patients to enjoy all the comforts of home while they are taking steps to learn about their health.

Our in-person sleep studies are offered seven days a week to allow patients to have their sleep test around their busy schedules. Overnight sleep studies typically begin between 7–9pm and end by 6am so patients can avoid missing work or school.

### At-home sleep study

Some patients may be better candidates to take their sleep studies at home. Home sleep studies allow us to see if there are breathing or oxygen issues while you sleep.

Our Sleep Medicine provider and technician will provide you with equipment and instructions for you to take home, so you can take the sleep study at your leisure. Devices are used over a single night and then returned to the Sleep Lab where it will be interpreted.
