# 3 Reasons You Should Take Care of Your Skin

As the body’s largest organ, your skin has the equally large job of protecting you from germs and natural elements. There are many reasons why you should take good care of your skin, so we narrowed it down to three. Check it out!

## 1. You can prevent future problems.

Good skin care today means fewer skin health concerns in the future. If you’re familiar with your skin, then you’ll know when something is wrong—such as a new or changing mole, for example. Keeping your skin clean, using sunscreen, and staying out of direct sunlight are all ways to protect yourself from skin cancer or other serious skin conditions. Being proactive with skin care and screenings can help you avoid problems down the road.

Your doctor can perform preventative skin cancer screenings to catch concerns before they turn into problems. Regular checkups help your doctor assess the current shape and size of moles and skin spots. Upon return visits, they will be able to tell if there are any changes that may need further inspection. If it’s been awhile since you were last screened, [be sure to schedule a visit](https://www.schneckmed.org/medical-services/primary-care).

## 2. Your skin will look better.

Your body sheds skin cells every day. If you’re not taking care of your skin, then you’re not getting rid of those dead cells—or the dirt and bacteria that naturally builds up with them. Using a gentle body soap and face wash daily will remove the bad and make room for the good. As a result, you’ll keep your skin looking fresh, clean, and—added bonus—younger. Who doesn’t want that?

## 3. You’ll feel better.

Similar to brushing your teeth or getting enough sleep, washing your face contributes to a healthy lifestyle. It’s another small step you can take to make yourself feel better: Knowing you’ve done something that’s good for you makes you feel more confident. Plus, that positivity and confidence can motivate you to make other healthy choices throughout the day!

## So, where do you start?

Long story short: Take care of your skin and it will take care of you. A good skin care routine goes a long way toward helping your overall health, and it starts with small steps. But everybody’s skin is different, so don’t be surprised if you don’t figure out the perfect routine right away. If you’d like help deciding what’s right for you and your skin, our experts can help.
