Intro to Endocrinology
Dr. Amanda Kile, Schneck Endocrinology - September 10, 2020
Dr. Amanda Kile, Schneck Endocrinology, provides an overview of what endocrinology is, what an endocrinologist does, and why one would see an endocrinologist.

What is endocrinology?

Endocrinology is the branch of medicine pertaining to the endocrine system which is composed of glands, the hormones they secrete, and the diseases associated with them.  The endocrine glands include the thyroid, pancreas, ovaries and testes, adrenal glands, and pituitary.

What does an endocrinologist do?

An endocrinologist is a specially trained doctor.  After undergraduate college work, an endocrinologist completes four years of medical school, three years as a resident physician in Internal Medicine, followed by an additional two years of fellowship training in the endocrine systems.  We are trained to diagnose and manage diseases that affect the endocrine glands.  Endocrinologists replace, block, and enhance the endocrine hormones as needed to restore hormone balance within the body.
Commonly treated conditions:
  • Diabetes and Hypoglycemia
  • Thyroid disorders (Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Thyroid nodules, Thyroid Cancer)
  • Bone and Mineral disorders (Osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency, and Parathyroid disorders)
  • Adrenal disorders (Cushing’s syndrome, Adrenal Insufficiency, Endocrine related hypertension)
  • Pituitary disorders (Prolactinoma, Acromegaly, Diabetes Insipidus, Hypopituitarism)
  • Lipid disorders (abnormalities in Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels)
  • Gonadal disorders (Male Hypogonadism and PCOS)

Why should I see an endocrinologist?

After discussing concerns with your primary care physician, they may run tests, diagnose or even treat basic hormonal conditions. However, with complex endocrine disorders the help of a specialist is needed and patients are often referred to see an endocrinologist. After consultation with your endocrine specialist they may suggest further evaluation methods and treatment plans depending on the underlying condition causing your symptoms.
