August 14, 2018
Dr. Iwema is a general surgeon with Schneck Surgical Associates. She attended medical school at Rush Medical College and completed a residency in general surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland.
Where did you grow up? “I grew up in South Holland, Illinois which is a suburb of Chicago.”

What hobbies do you enjoy? “I enjoy cooking and baking. For me, it is fun    to try new recipes and experiment, but I also like making recipes that I have memorized.”

Where would you most like to visit? “There are many places that I would like to visit around the world. However, there are still many places in the United States that I have yet to experience.  In particular, I would like to visit the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park.”

When did you know you wanted to be a physician? “My path to medicine began when I was young with my love of science and learning how things work. Eventually, I found that the best application of this passion was to pursue a career as a physician.”

What do you like most about practicing medicine? “The profession of medicine allows me to have an impact on the lives of many people. What I look forward to most is finding a way to connect with each person and each family.”

What is one of your most memorable patient stories? “One patient, in particular, that I remember is a young male who was involved in snowmobile accident that caused a complex femur fracture and lacerated his femoral vessels. After spending an entire evening in the operating room, the vascular system and bone were repaired. Working with multiple health care workers during the operation and recovery strengthened my appreciation for the teamwork that is necessary to care for patients. The patient's recovery went well and he walked out of the hospital.”

Why did you decide to join Schneck Medical Center? “I was drawn to the strong focus on community at Schneck. Immediately, I felt welcomed by everyone I met and appreciated the dedication to providing excellent patient care.”
