SCHNECK WELCOMES DR. JENI SHULL!
December 06, 2018
Dr. Shull is a family physician fellowship trained in Lifestyle Medicine and has joined Well Life by Schneck. She received her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, completed her masters at Loma Linde University, residency at Loma Linda University School of Public Health, and fellowship at Black Hills Health & Education Center.

Where did you grow up? I grew up outside of Rome City, a small town in northeastern Indiana.
During high school, I was part of show choir and really enjoyed singing and dancing. My friends volunteered with a local Christian coffee house and concert venue. It was such an influence. I was actually part of a chick band my senior year as the lead vocalist, which, thankfully, never made it out of my friend’s garage! I also grew up horseback riding and making pottery pieces.

In college, I volunteered on a couple church worship teams, studied a whole lot, and began my very early career in preventive medicine as I put my friends on a semester-long intervention of eating mainly fruits, vegetables, fish, and very little dairy. They did great and I saw for the first time how eating healthy foods could be fun and make a huge difference in someone’s life.

Please tell us about your family. I have a wonderful family that challenges me to be my best and supports me in my low moments, even though we are far apart. My parents still live in northern Indiana and my siblings live in Miami and San Diego. At least, they are all great vacation spots!

What hobbies do you enjoy? Currently, I am really enjoying running and try to run 5Ks and half-marathons. Last year I completed my first full marathon which was really fun, but quite a time commitment. I am hoping to run another marathon next year. I also still enjoy making pottery, painting, drawing with pastels, and creating some new dishes in the kitchen. I enjoy singing on my church’s worship team, and hope to someday be the backup singer in a jazz band.

Where would you most like to visit? I was able to visit Ireland this least year, so now I’d like to New Zealand because of the caves with the glow worms. The Fiji Islands are a close second.

When did you know you wanted to be a physician? It was in my senior year of high school. I had grown up with asthma and allergies and had to be hospitalized multiple times. Our family doctor helped me learn how to treat and control my asthma. I am confident I would not be alive without him and the other medical professionals who helped treat me. Being a physician felt like the best way I could give back and help others.

What is one of your most memorable patient stories? As a family physician, I get to be a part of the patient’s journey. One patient in residency had liver cirrhosis. Due to life choices and non-compliance she was not a candidate for the liver transplant list.  Initially, she was challenging to work with, but as I got to know her, we began to develop a relationship. At her last visit, we cried and talked about the important things in life. She passed away my last week of residency. She was one of those people who changed me and changed the way I practiced medicine.

What do you like most about practicing medicine? There are so many things I enjoy about practicing medicine, but I think my favorite with coaching with patients and seeing them create and implement the changes they need to make to reach their health goals. It’s like a light bulb comes on and they get this confident smile on their face – gets me every time!

Why did you decide to join Schneck Medical Center? I was really impressed with how close and collegial the medical staff was. It felt like a great place to learn and grow. Also, Schneck Well Life was uniquely suited for the practice and research of lifestyle medicine, a new and upcoming specialty in medicine.
