Schneck Adds New Level of Care for Breastfeeding Mothers
May 28, 2019
In continuing its commitment to Baby Friendly, a designation supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Schneck Medical Center has opened an Outpatient Lactation Clinic for new moms experiencing difficulty with breastfeeding after leaving the hospital.

“Schneck has adopted rigorous policies and process to ensure breastfeeding mothers have the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies,” said Schneck’s Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultant Diane Ortel, BSN, IBCLC. “Many moms face unexpected breastfeeding challenges when they get home from the hospital. This is why we are so excited to open our Outpatient Lactation Clinic and help new moms continue to have a positive breastfeeding experience.”

According to the 2018 Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Breastfeeding Report Card, among infants born in 2015 in the United States, 4 out of 5 (83.2%) started to breastfeed, over half (57.6%) were breastfeeding at 6 months, but only one-third (35.9%) were breastfeeding at 12 months.

The goal of Schneck’s Outpatient Lactation Clinic is to keep moms breastfeeding well after they leave the hospital with ongoing comprehensive care and support, and to address any medical issues with mom or baby that may hinder a successful breastfeeding experience.

“Much of the problem can be attributed to the minor difficulties new moms may have in the beginning that become bigger issues when they go back to work and can’t continue breastfeeding,” Ortel said. “Schneck’s Outpatient Lactation Clinic helps bridge the gap in care so new moms and babies have a successful breastfeeding experience.”

Schneck’s Outpatient Lactation Clinic is open to all new moms, regardless of where they delivered and provides one-on-one consultation with an Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultant. Patients can be referred by their physician or self-refer.
