### Kidney & Bladder Health

Your kidneys and bladder play a vital role in freeing your body of toxins. Ensuring they’re functioning properly is crucial to maintaining your overall health. Common kidney and bladder issues include:

- Kidney stones, urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder polyps, bladder cancer, and painful bladder syndrome.

These conditions manifest in the body in several different ways. **It's important to be aware of any discomfort, pain, or difficulty experienced when urinating.** They may be the initial symptoms of a more serious issue.

### Prostate Health

The prostate is an important part of the male reproductive system. As men age, the common prostate issues they may experience include:

- Prostate cancer and Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also known as an enlarged prostate.

These conditions cause a significant amount of discomfort, often leading to a complete blockage of the bladder. **In the case of prostate cancer, an early diagnosis greatly improves the chances of survival.**

### Reproductive Health

The CDC reports that 1 in 5 people in the United States experiences an STI. The commonality of STIs indicates that more than half of all people experience one at some point in their life. Common STIs/STDs include:

- Chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, HIV, and syphilis.

**The symptoms of these infections often present themselves a few weeks after intimacy with an infected partner.** Remain aware of any discomfort, burning sensation, or unusual urinary discharge. Fortunately, the majority of STIs are highly treatable.

### Urinary Incontinence

Urinary Incontinence is experienced by over 20 million people in the US alone with women being affected most often. Various life events such as aging, childbirth, prostate cancer, and injury can cause incontinence. The inability to retain urine creates embarrassing situations for individuals that lowers their quality of life. Common types of incontinence include:

- Overactive bladder, stress incontinence, urge incontinence, and functional incontinence.

**First Urology takes a considerate and educative approach** to incontinence management that empowers you to take control of your life again.

## Frequently Asked Urology Questions

### What is a urologist?

A urologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of health issues involving the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs.

### Who should see a urologist?

Urologists care for diseases affecting the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra) and the male reproductive organs (penis, testes, scrotum, and prostate). Talk to your primary care physician to see if a referral to Schneck Urology is right for you.

### What causes kidney stones?

Common causes of kidney stones include drinking insufficient amounts of water and consuming too much salt or sugar. Obesity and family history have also been shown to be contributing factors.

### How are kidney stones treated?

Depending on the size and number of kidney stones, a doctor may recommend allowing your body to pass the kidney stone without surgical intervention. If the kidney stone is causing a blockage or infection, a urologist may recommend surgically removing it due to the potential of a worsening infection. Shock-wave lithotripsy is a common non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves to blast the kidney stone into fragments your body can pass more easily.

### What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

Common symptoms of prostate cancer include blood in urine, pain or burning during urination, abnormally frequent urination, weak urinary flow, and pain or discomfort in the bladder region when sitting.

### What causes an enlarged prostate?

While the exact cause of an enlarged prostate is not known, it is believed that hormonal changes that take place as a man ages may be responsible. All men will experience an enlarged prostate if they live long enough. Despite that, it is important to note when an enlarged prostate may be causing pain that indicates an issue outside of expected hormonal growth.

### What are the side effects of a vasectomy?

Possible side effects of a vasectomy include infection, bruising of the scrotum, discomfort, swelling, and blood in your semen. It is important to note that these side effects are not common but instead dependent on the physician's expertise and the patient’s receptiveness to the procedure.

A vasectomy will not affect your sexual performance, cause severe prolonged pain or put you at risk for developing cancer or heart disease.

### What causes a prolapsed bladder?

The bladder in the female body is supported by the wall of the vagina. Age, childbirth, or injury may cause the vaginal wall to weaken, causing the bladder to prolapse or descend into the vagina. A prolapsed bladder may cause urinary incontinence, discomfort or difficulty urinating.

### What is a bladder sling?

A bladder sling is a surgical procedure that corrects the symptoms of incontinence. Tissue is extracted from your body to create a supportive “sling” that raises the urethra and prevents the leakage of urine. It is important to note that there are several iterations of this procedure and each one varies in its execution and purpose.
