# Breast Reconstruction

 

 Breast reconstruction refers to surgery to restore the shape, size, or appearance of the breast following a [mastectomy](https://www.schneckmed.org/treatments/breast-surgery). Depending on the status of the breast and the end goal for the patient there are different reconstruction surgery types: flap and impact.

  
Flap reconstruction refers to utilizing the patient’s own tissues (usually from another area in the body) to reconstruct the breast. Implant reconstruction utilizes a surgical implant (silicone or saline) to give the shape of a breast.
