# Colectomy

 

 A colectomy is a surgery to remove part or all of the colon from a patient’s body. The colon is an organ that is located near the end of the digestive system and is responsible for waste removal. A colectomy is sometimes done in conjunction with other colon surgeries in order to redirect waste (colostomy).

Colectomies are typically performed to treat colon diseases such as [cancer](https://www.schneckmed.org/conditions/cancer), Chron’s disease, or ulcerative colitis. It can also be done to reshape the colon after an injury, a birth defect, or a bowel obstruction.
