# Cryotherapy of Lung

Also called cryoablation or cryosurgery, cryotherapy of the lung is a procedure involving extreme cold to treat lung [cancer](https://www.schneckmed.org/conditions/cancer). Utilizing a device called a cryoprobe, [surgeons](https://www.schneckmed.org/medical-services/surgery/surgical-associates) directly treat the cancerous area by freezing the tissue. Once the area is frozen, the provider will allow it to thaw before repeating the procedure.

Cryotherapy is primarily utilized when surgical options are not possible and is often used in combination with treatments like [chemotherapy](https://www.schneckmed.org/treatments/chemotherapy) or [radiation](https://www.schneckmed.org/treatments/radiation-therapy). It can treat large tumors and also alleviate [cancer-related pain](https://www.schneckmed.org/conditions/cancer-related-pain) or other symptoms. In addition to lung cancer, cryotherapy can be utilized for other cancer types such as breast, bone, liver, prostate, and others.
