# Nissen or Toupet Fundoplication

Nissen and Toupet fundoplication are surgical [anti-reflux procedures](https://www.schneckmed.org/treatments/anti-reflux-procedures) to treat Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Both involve the placement of a floppy, short wrap around the distal esophagus. The difference is that Nissen is a complete, 360-degree wrap whereas Toupet is a 270-degree wrap. The procedures reinforce the lower portion of the esophagus to aid the sphincter and prevents acid from backing up causing [acid reflux](https://www.schneckmed.org/conditions/acid-reflux) and heartburn.

Both procedures can be performed laparoscopically which is less invasive as smaller incisions are made. Recovery time is shortened with procedures performed laparoscopically. Depending on the patient's condition, a provider will make the best recommendation for the type of procedure needed.

If you or a loved one suffer from chronic acid reflux, help is possible. Work with your Schneck team to understand your surgical options.
