It’s normal to experience the “baby blues” during the first days and weeks after giving birth. In fact, up to 1 in 5 women will suffer from a range of maternal mental health disorders like postpartum depression, anxiety, and psychosis.

All new mothers experience anxiety. It can manifest as a physical symptom—My heart drops when my baby cries—or a behavioral response—I have to double check to make sure the baby is breathing.

Anxiety can also impact the way a person thinks—I hope the baby is okay. I probably shouldn’t have brought them out to the store. Now my baby is probably going to get sick.

All of these, as well as other manifestations, are normal responses to the stressors of motherhood.

Led by Kait Powell, licensed mental health counselor, Schneck’s postpartum support group provides peer support for moms who may be experiencing depression or anxiety during their transition to motherhood.

Participants must register for the session. Please call 812-524-4271 to register for an upcoming session.
