Volunteer Spotlight - Joie Curtis & Tilly

| Volunteer Spotlight

How long have you been volunteering with Schneck Medical Center, and in what area(s) or capacity do you serve?

In August 2025, I began volunteering at Schneck Medical Center (SMC) with my therapy Dog, Tilly. Together, we visit patients, staff, and anyone who would like to meet and pet Tilly.

What inspired you to become a volunteer at Schneck?

I enjoy sharing Tilly with others, and this opportunity gives us a regular volunteer schedule close to home.

What do you enjoy most about your volunteer experience?

Tilly is the perfect segue into a conversation with a patient. When someone meets her, they often smile as they pet her and learn more about her. Soon, they are telling me about their current pet-or even a childhood pet - and often showing me a photo of their pet at home. Visiting with Tilly can provide comfort and encouragement, while temporarily diverting attention from health concerns.

Can you share a memorable moment or meaningful interaction you've had while volunteering?

On one occasion, a patient received a serious diagnosis and was in tears. When she saw Tilly, she immediately held on to her. Tilly jumped onto the bed and snuggled close to the patient with love. It brought tears to my eyes. I am also encouraged by how warmly Tilly is received by staff and others throughout the facility. Folks may not know me or my name, but they know Tilly.

What would you say to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer at Schneck Medical Center?

SMC provides a warm, friendly environment in which to volunteer. The time you invest in others will reward you ten times over.
