Dialysis Access And Ports

Access ports are placed in individuals receiving hemodialysis to ensure quality treatment and reduce the risk of infection. Hemodialysis or dialysis is a treatment for those whose kidneys have stopped working properly to remove waste and excess fluid from the blood.

The most comment type of access port is the arteriovenous (AV) fistula, which is a surgical connection between the artery and vein to increase the blood flow rate from the dialysis machine to the vein. Other types of ports include:

  • Central venous catheter (CVC)

  • Arteriovenous (AV) graft

  • Peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter

Depending on the individual's unique needs a provider will select the access port that provides the best care possible. At Schneck, our team of expert care providers will help patients and their loved ones understand their options.
