Drug or alcohol tests utilize a biological sample to detect if a legal or illegal drug is or is not present in an individual. They are commonly performed as a part of workplace screenings and usually involve a blood or urine sample. They can also be utilized as a part of the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of an alcohol or substance use disorder.

Blood and urine are the most common biological sample to test however hair follicles, sweat, and breath may also be utilized. The type of sample required depends on the substance for which the individual is being screened.
